What is Borosilicate glass 3.3?

Borosilicate glass 3.3 is a type of high-quality glass known for its excellent thermal resistance, chemical durability, and low thermal expansion. The “3.3” refers to its very low coefficient of thermal expansion, which is approximately 3.3 x 10^-6/K. This low coefficient makes it particularly resistant to thermal shock, meaning it can withstand sudden temperature changes without cracking or breaking.

Composition and Properties:
  • Primary Components: Borosilicate glass is made from silica (SiO₂) and boron trioxide (B₂O₃), with additional elements like sodium oxide and aluminum oxide. The high proportion of silica and boron trioxide gives it superior resistance to thermal and chemical stress compared to regular soda-lime glass.
  • Thermal Stability: The low thermal expansion coefficient (3.3) means that borosilicate glass expands very little when heated, reducing the risk of cracking under temperature fluctuations. It can handle temperatures up to around 500°C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Borosilicate glass is highly resistant to most acids, alkalis, and solvents, making it suitable for chemical processing, laboratory glassware, and industrial applications.
  • Optical Clarity: It has excellent optical properties, making it suitable for optical lenses, lab equipment, and observation windows where transparency is required.
Advantages of Borosilicate Glass 3.3:
  • Durability: Less prone to cracking or shattering compared to regular glass, especially under extreme temperature changes.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of applications, from household items to complex industrial processes.
  • Safety: Since it is resistant to leaching and chemical interactions, it is safe for use in applications involving food, medicine, and sensitive chemical reactions.
