What is pH?
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a solution is. Ranging from 0 – 14, a pH scale of 7 is neutral with any results lower than this indicating an acidic solution and any results higher indicating an alkali solution. Determining the pH of solutions is important in understanding and controlling chemical and biological processes across a wide range of disciplines, including agriculture, manufacturing and medicine.
Both pH meters and paper universal indicators are used to determine pH. Indicator paper is widely available, but with such a variety on offer how do you know which one is best suited to your needs?
Precision
pH strips are available in a variety of pH ranges; the narrower the range, the more sensitive the strip. It’s important to use a strip specifically designed for the pH range the user is interested in, a strip designed to measure a pH of 0 – 7 wouldn’t be suitable for alkali measurements.
Instant Readings
Colour change should take place quickly and clearly indicate the pH value upon contact with the solution. Paper indicators should be accompanied by clear instructions for interpretation.
Integrity
It’s crucial that the pH strip doesn’t react with the solution as this could provide a false reading. It’s important too, that the strip is stable and doesn’t degrade upon contact with the sample.
Reliability
Results obtained need to be repeatable and accurate.
Cost Effective
pH strips are an affordable option for most labs, making them a practical solution. However, the single-use nature of these products can start to increase costs overtime.

Things to Consider…
While pH indicator strips are common place in the lab, there are a number of factors that need to be considered when deciding how you choose to measure pH. Strips are not as accurate as digital meters and may not be suitable for precise results. In addition, determining the result on strips can be subjective, especially between shades and sample colour may also interfere with results.
Severn Sales offer an extensive range of indicator papers, available in both strips and reels as well as digital pH meters. We’re on hand to assist with your queries and are happy to help advise which products would be suitable for your work environment.
