Trip to Chennai Metco

Trip to Chennai Metco

06 Dec 2017

Candice, our Sales Account Manager, recently visited Chennai, India with some of the Severn Sales team, Nick and James. Below Candice shares how it all went.

In November I was lucky enough to go and visit with our metallurgy equipment manufacturer who is based in Chennai, India. This was a great opportunity to go and see where the equipment is made and actually gain some hands-on experience with the machines. This was to be a very quick trip due to scheduling conflicts but in the end provided invaluable information and an unforgettable experience.

After travelling for several hours halfway across the world we were greeted by the staff at Chennai Metco with a traditional Indian welcome including a fresh flower garland and tikka (forehead mark). After we had settled in we met with several of the staff including the director and exports team before we were able to visit their extensive premises including the assembly line and the research and development area. This involved travelling by car along India’s fast-paced roads, an experience in itself! After an introductory tour of the factory and a stop for lunch we were provided with further information on the products and the key features of each of the products before the jet lag hit and sleep beckoned.

The second day began with a cultural tour around Chennai, stopping off at several incredible buildings including the engineering university, St Thomas’ church and Fort St George. After a beautiful morning experiencing a little bit of life in Chennai we headed back to Chennai Metco for a traditional South Indian lunch. An experience I will surely never forget! We were then able to have a practical session using all of the equipment on offer, cutting our own sample, mounting in resin and grinding and polishing to a high shine before etching the exposed metal. This practical session provided a greater understanding of metallurgy equipment and the processes involved. We ended our final day with some service training and I even came home with my very own sari thanks to our fantastic hosts.
